J. Gregory Smith papers, 1810-1899.

The J. Gregory Smith papers are made up of business and personal papers of Smith and chronicle his involvement with the Vermont Central Railroad and Vermont and Canada Railroad. There is correspondence from 1839 to 1899 to and from Smith, primarily concerning railroad business, but there is also some personal correspondence with family members. Some of the early correspondence is Smith's father, John, 1851-4, and in the later years there is correspondence of his son, E.C. Smith, 1897, both of whose careers in railroading overlapped J. Gregory's. The correspondence series also include letterbooks of Smith's outgoing letters, 1882-1891. There are papers of the Vermont Central Railroad Company, 1849-1873, the Central Vermont Railroad Company, 1874-1891; the Vermont and Canada Railroad, 1845-1879, the Consolidated Railroad, ca. 1877-1884, and the Northern Pacific Railroad, 1866-1882. There are also a few papers of other businesses owned and operated by the Smith family including Smith, Brainerd and Company, 1853; the National Car Company, 1877; and the St. Albans Iron and Steel Works, 1872-1883. Other railroads and businesses represented in the collection are the Canada and Atlantic Railway Company, 1879-1896; Burlington and Lamoille Railroad, 1880-1888; Grand Trunk Railway Company, 1883-1889; Missisquoi Valley Railway Company, 1870-1883; New London Northern Railroad and New London Steamboat Company, 1882-1885; St. Albans and Richford Plank Road Company, 1850; and the Waterloo, Magog Railway Company, 1881-1883.
